A missing teenage girl... a desperate mother... a frantic call in the night... is this a cruel hoax, or the work of a maniacal serial killer? The peaceful resort town of St. Teresa-by-the-Sea on Florida's Forgotten Coast is known for its low crime rate, pristine beaches, and great fishing. But tragedy can come even to Paradise, as Carol Dennison found out two and a half years ago when her fourteen-year-old daughter, Kelly, disappeared on her way to a Tallahassee concert. Now, just as Carol as beginning to rebuild the pieces of her shattered life, she receives a midnight call from someone who calls her "mama" and begs for help. Is this a cruel prank designed to terrorize and punish Kelly's father for the role he played in bringing a recently paroled criminal to justice? Or is it possible that Kelly is still alive? A grim investigation uncovers a connection between Kelly and other girls who have gone missing along the Gulf Coast in the past few years. When the body of one of those missing girls washes up on the shores of St. Teresa-by-the-Sea, the police are forced to admit they may have a serial killer in their midst. And with over three thousand college students poised to descend on the tiny community for spring break, their only hope for stopping him before he strikes again is the frightened voice of a teenage girl on the telephone... and the desperate determination of the parents who love her. Shattered is Donna Ball at her best spine-tingling terror, chilling realism and unforgettable characters. No parent will ever watch her child leave the house in the same way again. Praise for the work of Donna Ball "A maelstrom of suspense… gripping, intense” --Rendezvous “[Ball] knows how to keep a story moving” --Kirkus Reviews “A major talent of the genre” --Publisher’s Weekly “A must read” --Examiner.com

I loved this one. The writing is superb. The story had great pacing and flowed beautifully making the reading easy. The characters are full, believable, and likable. The premise, although not at all original, is good and well executed without discrepancies or flaws of any kind that I could see. The descriptions are very well done without being too wordy. I could "picture" Carol's house, the beach, the office, the lighthouse, and every other location. I could see the characters. I love it when an author is able to do that and Ms. Ball did it to perfection. The family dynamic is realistic and it's easy to identify with their issues. The dialogue is genuine and believable. There is absolutely nothing "flat" in this story.

I did have to suspend disbelief in a couple of areas relating to actions of the police, but it was easy as the story was so compelling and the few issues I had were not major.

There was some course language, largely from one character, in one scene. If there was more than that I don't recall it, so it wasn't overused. There was no graphic sexual content. The violence was not too graphic, just enough to further the plot.

Shattered drew my attention and compelled me to keep reading. It is absolutely 5-star worthy.

This book was different from any I have read by Donna Ball. I love her Lady Bug Farm books and her Raine Stockton series. This book was more in the thriller genre.

The setting is a beach resort town in Florida. It seems that during spring break week a serial killer is on the loose. To add to the tension, Carol and Guy's daughter, Kelly had run away two years before and was now calling. This book was unputdownable!
Wierd wierd wierd confusing bad guy confusing sherrif confusing. Parents. Not good enough to recommend to anyone. Didn't like it.
I enjoyed reading Shattered. It was well written , fast paced, thrilling and hard to put down. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a seriously exciting book.
Good plot but where was the editor? On one page the author uses the word absently twice, as in "he said, absently". On the following page, the same character does something "absently" for a third time. This jarred me out of the story for a while, but I'm glad I kept reading. There is an exciting pay off at the end of the book.
I LOVE THESE BOOKS! ANyone who has ever had a dog should read these stories. Raine Stockton is a ballsey gal who is tough, adores her life and town, and wont take no for an answer. Her dog "Cisco" is a lovable clown who enjoys the limelight, but knows when to be serious. These stories keep me entertained and I start getting depressed when the stories come to their ending!. I think these books are an instant classic. Please read these to your kids outloud and (you can omit the love scenes) but they are pretty tame. A++++ on the whole series.
I love Donna Ball's books!

This book and another I recently read (Exposure http//www./gp/product/B0055PONTO/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title) are heavier on suspense than romance and the sense that you are living with the characters that I had with Lady Bug Farm and get in the Raine Stockton series - which I highly recommend as well!

That said this was great read, suspenseful and not quite what I expected from the plot!

I would have given it 5 stars except I feel I have to reserve that last star for the mind blowing ones or the OMG I want another 100 pages.
Since all three of her series are located on the "Forgotten Coast" of Florida, I would have preferred this story line to appear in one of the other two with characters I already know. I kept waiting for some of the other people/locations to materialize. In spite of that, it was a good story.
